Conan Doyle is most noted for creating the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and writing stories about him which are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. Other works of this prolific writer include fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.
The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the crime novels featuring Sherlock Holmes, first published in 1901-1902. It tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson investigate the case.
